Guided Biofilm Treatment (GBTx)

A Modern Approach to Preventive and Periodontal Care

At Citadel Dental, we’re proud to offer GBTx — Guided Biofilm Treatment: a gentle, science-based approach to removing biofilm and maintaining healthy teeth and gums.

GBTx is ideal for patients of all ages, especially those managing gum disease, wearing braces or implants, or looking for a more comfortable alternative to traditional dental cleanings.

What Is BioFilm, and Why Is It Important?

Biofilm is a thin, sticky layer of bacteria that forms on the surfaces of your teeth, gums, and soft tissues. If not professionally removed, biofilm can lead to inflammation, bleeding gums, cavities, and periodontal disease.

Even with excellent home care, biofilm often builds up in areas that are difficult to reach with brushing and flossing alone.

What Is GBTx?

Guided Biofilm Treatment (GBTx) is a systematic, patient-centred approach to cleaning teeth more effectively and comfortably. The process begins by highlighting the presence of biofilm using a safe disclosing solution, which guides our hygiene team in removing buildup with precision and care.

Unlike traditional cleanings that rely on blind scaling, GBTx allows us to see and remove the biofilm thoroughly while being gentle on your teeth and gums.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

1. Biofilm Disclosure

A disclosing agent is applied to make biofilm clearly visible. This step shows you where buildup is hiding and helps guide a more accurate cleaning.

2. Air Polishing

A gentle jet of warm water and fine powder removes soft plaque, biofilm, and stains from all surfaces of the teeth, including around brackets or restorations.

3. Targeted Scaling

If any hardened tartar is present, we’ll use ultrasonic or hand instruments to remove it carefully and comfortably.

4. Personalized Prevention

Before you leave, we’ll review a customized plan to help you maintain your results between visits and reduce biofilm buildup at home.
